Harper University Hospital is a 400-bed teaching institution affiliated with Wayne State University School of Medicine. The Hospital has centers of excellence within the DMC for Oncology, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular, Obstetrics and Gynecology treatment, teaching and research.
The Harper Emergency Department underwent renovation and expansion in early 2013 transforming into a 45-bed Smart ED. Each patient bay is equipped with bedside computers for charting and medication scanning to provide safe care to our patients. We also utilize Space Lab technology for our cardiac monitoring allowing alarms to be transmitted directly to nurse’s phone. In the ED there are approximately 39,000 annual patient visits with emphasis on adult medical and OB/GYN diagnoses. Within the DMC, trauma is directed to Detroit Receiving Hospital and pediatrics to Children’s Hospital of Michigan.
The acuity level of patients is quite high with approximately 27% of patients admitted. Physician coverage is generally 9 hour shifts with PGY III Emergency Medicine Resident coverage ten hours per day, five days a week. In addition, our ED physicians at Harper work with a scribe on most of their shifts.
Medical Center Emergency Services established a 16-bed Observation Medicine Clinical Decision Unit at Harper Hospital in 2011.
